There’s no better time to have a garden than during the summer months. Sunnier, warmer weather makes it easier to spend time entertaining, playing or cooking outdoors and lighter nights mean that you can sit outside until much later in the evening. In many homes however, the garden is often underutilised, either due to a lack of space or simple inconvenience. Some people may indeed lack a traditional garden space altogether and simply have driveways. If you’ve been underutilising your garden these past few years, then now’s the time to think about ways you could improve your home to better ‘connect’ it with your outside space. This could include installing some sliding doors/French doors, building a patio or decking or even building an entire extension.
French & sliding doors
French doors are an excellent way to open up your living space, kitchen or even a ground-floor bedroom to the outside. Not only do they allow more light into your rooms through their glass panelling, but they’re also perfect as a way of keeping your home cool during high summer temperatures! Imagine being able to simply walk outside from your living room when you want some fresh air, or being able to carry food from the kitchen to your garden bench or patio with ease for some al fresco dining. Sliding doors can also accomplish this same purpose, albeit with a different style and method of opening.
Consulting with a contractor like Copperwood Construction will allow you to gauge which option is best for you, depending on budget, garden space, insulation needs and personal preference.
Patios & wooden decking
Once you have doors out into your garden, the question then becomes how you will sit out and enjoy the outdoor space. Depending on the footprint of your house and garden, either wooden decking or a stone patio might be the right option. Or you may choose to pick both! Either way, you want something that accommodates your desires for how you want to use your garden, whether you want to put up a table and chairs, set up a barbecue or have a space for your children to play.
Copperwood Construction provides customers with a range of options during the design stage for both patios and decking, carrying out construction to the highest possible standards. Read more about how we work.
Purpose-built extension
The final option we’d like to present incorporates both of the above methods: building a brand-new extension to your house. A custom extension allows you to create a living space that flows seamlessly between the rest of your home and the garden. You can have sliding doors and a patio installed from the get-go so that your new space is purpose-built to bring your home and garden together.
See some work-in-progress photos from one of our recent extension projects below, where we built custom decking that was accessible straight from the open-plan living area and provided a set of stairs down to the brand-new patio we also laid down:
No matter which way you choose to open up your home to your garden, you’re bound to feel the benefits straight away! We hope that everyone has a fun summer and makes the most of their gardens while the weather is at its best!
